History and significance of the Ki-21: The Mitsubishi Ki-21, formally designated as "Type 97 Heavy Bomber," was a Japanese heavy bomber used during World War II. Its mass production began in 1938, and the aircraft quickly gained a reputation for its excellent aerodynamics and ability to conduct long-range bombing missions. The Ki-21-Ib was the second production modification of this line of bombers, characterized by increased armament, partially protected fuel tanks, and modified tail lights.
This aircraft was widely used in various campaigns, including the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Nomonhan Incident, and the early stages of the Pacific War, including the Malayan, Burmese, Dutch East Indies, and New Guinea campaigns. The Ki-21 attacked targets as far away as western China, India, and northern Australia. As the war progressed and losses increased, many of these aircraft were reassigned to training or secondary roles.
