Plastic military model kit: Light tank R-35 early version 1:72 First To Fight PL078

The Renault R35 is a French light infantry tank from the World War II period, with the first prototypes presented in 1934, and mass production running from 1935 to 1940. In total, about 1600 units of this tank of all versions were produced. The drive was a single Renault 447 carburetor engine with 82 hp. The armament consisted of a 37 mm SA18 L/21 or SA38 L/33 cannon and one 7.5 mm MAC31 machine gun.

The Renault R35 was developed as a successor to the Renault FT-17, created during World War I, and was intended to cooperate with infantry units from the very beginning. Initially, it was assumed that the new tank would only be armed with machine guns, but this idea was abandoned during testing. Finally, the Renault R35 had good armament for the late 1930s (the version with the SA38 cannon), enabling it to engage virtually any German or Italian tank. It also had very good armor and not the worst observation devices.

The drawbacks included poor performance, especially low top speed, an engine that tended to overheat and consumed large amounts of fuel, and - above all - the overburdening of the tank commander, who was unable to effectively command it on the battlefield. This flaw was typical of many other French tanks of that period. In 1940, the R40 model, which had a modified running gear, was adopted by the French army. After the fall of France in 1940, Renault R35 tanks were used by, among others, German and Italian forces.
