The M1 Abrams is a third-generation American main battle tank, designed by Chrysler Defense (now General Dynamics Land Systems) and named after General Creighton Abrams. It is one of the heaviest tanks in service, weighing nearly 66.8 metric tons. It introduced a number of modern technologies to the U.S. armored forces, such as a multi-fuel turbine engine, advanced Chobham composite armor, a computer fire control system, separate ammunition storage in an explosion-proof compartment, and an NBC protection system for crew safety.

The M1 Abrams was developed after the failure of the joint U.S.-West German MBT-70 project, which aimed to replace the outdated M60 tank. There are three main operational versions of the Abrams: M1, M1A1, and M1A2, with each subsequent iteration introducing improvements in armament, protection, and electronics. Despite plans to replace the Abrams with the XM1202 Mounted Combat System, this project was canceled, and the U.S. Army decided to continue maintaining and upgrading the M1 series.
