The M1 Super Sherman model kit in 1:35 scale from Takom is an excellent choice for enthusiasts of military history and modeling. This set, marked with the number 2206, allows you to build a static model of a tank that played a significant role in the history of the Israeli armed forces.

Model features:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Type: Static model kit
  • Manufacturer: Takom
  • Catalog number: 2206

History and background:

The M1 Super Sherman is a colloquial name for the upgraded versions of the American M4 Sherman tank, which were used by Israel in the 1950s and 1960s. The Israeli modifications were a response to the need for modern tanks in the face of increasing threats from neighboring Arab states, which began acquiring modern military equipment from the Eastern Bloc.

Main modifications:

  • Armament: The tank was equipped with a French CN D.1504 L/44 105 mm gun, which was adapted to fire specially stabilized HEAT rounds.
  • Engine: A Cummins VT-8-460 diesel engine with a power of 460 HP was used, allowing for speeds of up to 46 km/h.
  • Suspension: Changed to E8 HVSS (Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension) and fitted with 23-inch tracks, improving the tank's mobility.
  • Armor: The armor thickness was 63 mm with a slope angle of 47°, providing adequate protection for the crew.

Combat use:

The M51 tanks, also known as Isherman, participated in several key conflicts, such as:

  • Sinai Campaign (1956): First combat use of the upgraded Shermans.
  • Six-Day War (1967): These tanks were used on all fronts, effectively dealing with Soviet T-34-85, IS-3, and even T-54 tanks.
  • Yom Kippur War (1973): Despite their age, the M51s proved useful, and their armament was effective against newer designs like the T-62.

Additional information:

The Israeli modifications of the Sherman tanks were not only a response to operational needs but also a testament to the innovation and adaptability of the Israeli army. These tanks, although based on designs from World War II, were able to effectively compete with newer models on the battlefield thanks to their upgrades.
