History and use of the M113:
The M113 is a fully tracked armored personnel carrier (APC) developed and produced by FMC Corporation. First introduced into service in 1961, the M113 replaced earlier models M59 in the United States Army. Its first combat use occurred in April 1962, when the United States supplied it to the Army of South Vietnam as part of the MACV (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam) program. During the Vietnam War, the M113 became the most widely used armored vehicle of the U.S. Army, serving to break through dense foliage and attack enemy positions.
The M113 was the first combat vehicle with a hull made of aluminum, making it significantly lighter than earlier models. Its armor was thick enough to protect the crew and passengers from small arms fire, yet light enough for the vehicle to be air-transportable and partially amphibious.
Although the M113 has been replaced in the U.S. Army by the M2 and M3 Bradley vehicles as front-line combat vehicles, it is still widely used in support roles, such as armored ambulance, mortar carrier, engineering vehicle, or command vehicle. It is estimated that over 80,000 vehicles from the M113 family have been produced, which are used by more than 50 countries around the world, making it one of the most widely used combat vehicles in history.
