History and significance of the M1 Abrams: The M1 Abrams is a third-generation American main battle tank designed by Chrysler Defense (now General Dynamics Land Systems) and named after General Creighton Abrams. This tank was created with modern land warfare in mind and is one of the heaviest tanks in service, weighing nearly 66.8 metric tons.
