History and use of the M2 Bradley IFV:
The M2 Bradley IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) entered service in the U.S. Army in 1981. It was designed as part of the Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle program, aimed at creating a vehicle capable of transporting mechanized infantry units and providing them with fire support. The vehicle was named after General Omar Bradley, a legendary commander from World War II. The Bradley IFV serves a dual role: it transports infantry troops and provides them with protection and fire support. It is equipped with a 25 mm M242 automatic cannon, which is the vehicle's main armament. Additionally, the Bradley has a TOW missile system for engaging heavily armored targets such as tanks.
The vehicle is characterized by high maneuverability and the ability to operate in difficult terrain, allowing it to work alongside M1 Abrams tanks. The M2 Bradley features an aluminum hull reinforced with steel plates, providing protection against projectiles up to 14.5 mm caliber. In later versions, additional armor was added, including steel plates and Kevlar anti-shrapnel inserts, increasing its weight to 33 tons.
The M2 Bradley played a significant role during the Gulf War from 1990 to 1991, where it destroyed more Iraqi armored vehicles than M1 Abrams tanks. During the Iraq War starting in 2003, the Bradley demonstrated resilience against improvised explosive devices and anti-tank grenades, although some vehicles were destroyed. In 2023, Bradleys were transferred to Ukraine, where they were used in combat against Russian armed forces.
