History and use of the M41 Walker Bulldog:

The M41 Walker Bulldog tank, officially known as the 76 mm Gun M41 tank, was developed by Cadillac between 1951 and 1954. It was an American light tank, primarily created for reconnaissance purposes. It was designed as a successor to the outdated M24 Chaffee tanks from World War II. Although its main task was reconnaissance, its weight and armament also made it effective in the role of infantry support and for rapid air assaults.

Upon entering service in the U.S. Army, all M41 tanks were named Little Bulldog, and later Walker Bulldog, in honor of General Walton Walker, who died in a car accident in 1950. The M41 was the first American light tank after World War II to find widespread use around the world, particularly in Asia, where it was exported in significant quantities.

The development of the M41 accelerated after the outbreak of the Korean War, when the U.S. Army increased its demand for new tanks. However, the rush in production led to technical problems, and the relatively cramped interior of the hull and weak armament contributed to its average reputation among American tank crews. Compared to the Chaffee, the M41 was also considered too large for reconnaissance tasks.

The production of the M41A1 was completed by Cadillac in late 1954. In the 1960s, it was replaced by the M551 Sheridan tank, as its gun became ineffective against medium field tanks.
