The M50 Super Sherman was a key element of the Israeli armored forces in the post-war period. It was created as a deep modernization of American M4 Sherman tanks, aiming to adapt them to fight modern Soviet designs, such as the T-54 and T-55, appearing in the armies of Arab countries. The most significant change in the M50 version was the installation of the French GIAT CN L44 105 mm cannon, which required significant modification of the turret and the addition of a counterweight. During operation, these vehicles underwent further modernizations, including the replacement of the suspension from the older VVSS type to the more modern HVSS and the installation of more powerful Cummins diesel engines.

These tanks took an active part in the region's most important armed conflicts, including the Six-Day War (1967) and the Yom Kippur War (1973), proving their effectiveness despite being based on a World War II design. They served in the Israeli army until the late 1990s.
