Historical background: The Macchi C.202 Folgore, which means "lightning" in Italian, was one of the most important Italian fighters during World War II. Designed by Mario Castoldi, the C.202 was an evolution of the earlier C.200 Saetta model, but with a new, more aerodynamic fuselage and a Daimler-Benz DB 601Aa engine produced under license by Alfa Romeo. With this engine, the Folgore reached speeds of up to 600 km/h, making it one of the fastest fighters of its time.
The C.202 was used on all fronts where Italian air forces fought, including North Africa, Malta, and the Eastern Front. It was known for its agility and speed, allowing it to effectively compete with Allied fighters. Despite its advantages, the C.202 also had drawbacks, such as weak armament and radio issues, which often forced pilots to communicate by waving their wings.
