History and background of the vehicle: The Mercedes-Benz 170 V, on which the MB 170 Lieferwagen model is based, was one of the main models of the brand from the mid-1930s to the 1950s. It was presented as the successor to the W15 Type 170 in February 1936 and quickly became the best-selling Mercedes model of that period. By 1939, over 75,000 units had been produced, making it the most popular model of the brand up to that time. The 170 V model was known for its reliability and versatility, which made it used in various body styles, including as a limousine, convertible, and in utility versions such as vans and special vehicles. The delivery version represented by the MB 170 Lieferwagen model was developed based on the 170 V chassis and was used for both commercial purposes and by emergency services and the military.
Engine and performance: The Mercedes-Benz 170 V was powered by a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.7 liters, generating 38 HP at 3400 rpm. It was a side-valve engine that, despite having a similar displacement to its predecessor, offered greater power. The car was equipped with a four-speed manual transmission with synchronization, ensuring smooth driving.
Interesting facts:
- The "V" in the name 170 V stands for "Vorn" (front), which was meant to distinguish it from the 170H model with a rear-mounted engine.
- From 1935 to 1942, special versions of the 170 V were also produced, such as the 170 VG with all-wheel drive, which were tested by the German military.
- After the war, the 170 V model became the foundation on which Mercedes-Benz rebuilt its position in the automotive market.
