About the MD 450 Ouragan:
The MD 450 Ouragan, designed by Marcel Dassault, was the first French jet fighter to enter mass production. The prototype of this aircraft made its first flight on February 23, 1949, and the first production model took off on December 5, 1951. A total of 350 Ouragans were built, of which 175 went to the French Air Force, while the rest were delivered to Israel and India. The Salvadoran Air Force purchased 18 Ouragans from Israel.
History and significance:
The Ouragan played a key role in the revival of the French aviation industry after World War II. It was used by the air forces of France, India, Israel, and El Salvador. In Israeli service, the Ouragan participated in the Suez Crisis and the Six-Day War.
Design and performance:
- Engine: One Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet engine produced under license by Hispano-Suiza
- Armament: 4 Hispano-Suiza HS.404 20 mm cannons, capability to carry bombs and rockets
- Maximum speed: 940 km/h
- Combat range: 450 km
- Operational ceiling: 13,000 m
Operational use:
The Ouragan was primarily used as a fighter-bomber. In Israeli service, during the Suez Crisis, Ouragans conducted ground support and escort missions. During the conflict, they shot down several enemy aircraft, including four de Havilland Vampires. In India, these aircraft were used in ground support and reconnaissance missions during conflicts with Pakistan and China.
