History and technical background:

The Merkava MK III, introduced into service in December 1989, was produced until 2003 and remains one of the most numerous tanks on the IDF front line. Compared to its predecessor, the Merkava II, the MK III version has been significantly improved in terms of propulsion, armament, and electronic systems. The most significant change was the introduction of a locally developed 120 mm caliber gun, which, combined with a more powerful 1200 horsepower diesel engine, increased the tank's weight to 65 tons, but at the same time allowed it to achieve a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

The Merkava MK III tank was designed with maximum crew protection in mind. To this end, the engine is placed at the front, which increases protection against frontal attacks. This design also allows the tank to be used as a platform for medical evacuation, command post, or infantry fighting vehicle.
