Description

Plastic model airplane to assemble: Messerschmitt Me-163B Komet 1:32 Meng QS001

The plastic model Messerschmitt Me-163B Komet 1:32 from Meng is a unique proposition for aviation and modeling enthusiasts. This 1:32 scale assembly kit faithfully reproduces the characteristic silhouette of the rocket-powered, tail-less fighter, which became famous as the only operational rocket-powered fighter aircraft in history.

Model features:

  • Scale: 1:32
  • Model length: 178 mm
  • Model width: 292 mm
  • The kit includes components such as the engine, T-Stoff tank, and ammunition box.
  • Ability to build multiple flaps in open or closed position.
  • The model's fuselage construction refers to the structure of the actual aircraft.
  • The front and rear fuselage can be joined without glue, making assembly easier.
  • The kit includes a supporting frame for displaying interior details.
  • Three painting schemes to choose from.

Historical background: The Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet was designed and produced by the German company Messerschmitt as a rocket-powered interceptor. Its development began in 1937 under the guidance of German aerospace engineer Alexander Lippisch. This aircraft was the first piloted flying vehicle to exceed a speed of 1000 km/h in level flight.

The Me 163 prototype made its first flight on September 1, 1941, quickly demonstrating its unprecedented performance. In 1944, German test pilot Heini Dittmar achieved a speed of 1130 km/h, setting an unofficial speed record that was not surpassed by turbojet aircraft until 1953.

The Me 163 was primarily used for defense against enemy bombing raids. Despite its impressive performance, the aircraft had a limited range, which significantly restricted its combat potential. During the war, about 370 units were produced, most of which were used operationally. This aircraft was responsible for shooting down between 9 and 18 Allied aircraft, but its effectiveness in combat was less than expected.

Combat operations: The Me 163B began its combat operations in May 1944. Its unprecedented speed was difficult for Allied fighter pilots to counter. The typical tactic involved climbing vertically through bomber formations and then diving through them with open fire. Despite its speed, the Me 163 had a limited powered flight time, which was exploited by Allied pilots to attack it after it ran out of fuel.

By the end of the war, due to fuel shortages, many Me 163 aircraft remained grounded. In 1945, in the face of the advancing Allied offensive, the Me 163 was replaced by the more successful Me 262.

Assembly and painting kit. Does not include paints or glue. To assemble, separately sold modeling tools are needed (including cutters, files, tweezers), paints, brushes, and plastic model glue (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement). The photo shows a professionally assembled and painted model.
