History and significance of the Messerschmitt Me 262: The Messerschmitt Me 262, known as "Schwalbe" in fighter versions and "Sturmvogel" in fighter-bomber versions, was a groundbreaking aircraft in aviation history. Its design began in April 1939, and the first flight with a piston engine took place on April 18, 1941. The first flight with a jet engine occurred on July 18, 1942. Despite technical and political problems, the aircraft entered service in mid-1944.
The Me 262 was faster and better armed than any Allied fighter, including the British Gloster Meteor. Equipped with powerful cannons in the nose, it could effectively attack formations of USAAF bombers. Additionally, it could be armed with R4M "Orkan" rockets, which were capable of shooting down enemy bombers.
Despite its advanced technology, the Me 262 had a limited impact on the course of the war due to its late introduction into service and the limited number of units produced. Nevertheless, its design had a significant influence on the development of post-war jet aircraft, such as the North American F-86 Sabre and the MiG-15.
Kit for self-assembly and painting. Does not include paints or glue. For assembly, separately sold modeling tools are needed (including cutters, files, tweezers), paints, brushes, and plastic model glue (e.g., Tamiya Extra Thin Cement). The photo shows a professionally assembled and painted model.
