History and use of the Messerschmitt Me 410: The Messerschmitt Me 410 Hornisse (Hornet) was a heavy fighter and fast bomber (Schnellbomber) designed and produced by the German company Messerschmitt. This aircraft was used by the Luftwaffe in the second half of World War II. Work on the successor to the Bf 110 began in 1937, but the Me 210, which was to be its successor, proved unsuccessful, leading to its replacement by the Me 410.
The Me 410 was powered by larger Daimler-Benz DB 603 engines, had an elongated fuselage, and automatic slots on the leading edge of the wings. Serial production began in January 1943. The A-1 version was a lightly armed bomber, but there were also other variants, such as the reconnaissance aircraft A-1/U1, the bomber destroyer A-1/U2, and the night fighter A-2/U4.
The Me 410 was used for night bombing missions over the British Isles, where it often avoided interception by RAF fighters. It was also used as a bomber destroyer against formations of USAAF daylight bombers. Although it initially succeeded against unescorted bombers, it could not match lighter Allied fighters such as the P-51 Mustang and Spitfire.
By mid-1944, despite being Adolf Hitler's favorite bomber destroyer, the Me 410 was withdrawn from the defense of the Reich in favor of more heavily armed single-engine fighters. Ultimately, the Me 410 served as a reconnaissance aircraft.
