History and achievements of MG Metro 6R4:
MG Metro 6R4 is one of the most iconic rally cars of Group B, which dominated rallies in the 1980s. Group B was known for its extremely fast and technologically advanced vehicles, which, however, proved to be too dangerous, leading to its dissolution in 1987.
MG Metro 6R4 was designed by the British brand MG, which was part of the British Leyland group, later transformed into the Rover Group. This car was one of the few models created specifically for Group B, making it unique among other rally cars of that era.
Under the hood, the MG Metro 6R4 featured a centrally mounted, naturally aspirated 3-liter V6 engine, developing 416 horsepower. With all-wheel drive and a lightweight construction, this car could reach 100 km/h in just under four seconds, with a top speed of 225 km/h.
The MG Metro 6R4 made its rally debut in 1985, when the car won a regional rally in Wales. In November of the same year, the model was officially homologated in Group B and debuted in the World Championship during the Rally of Great Britain, finishing in third place. In the 1986 season, the MG Metro 6R4 participated in seven rallies, achieving fourth place in the San Remo Rally as its best result.
Although Group B was dissolved and the sporting career of the MG Metro 6R4 came to an end, this car left a lasting mark in automotive history. Its engine and drivetrain became the basis for other projects, including the super sports coupe MG EX-E and the Jaguar XJ220, which for a short time was the fastest production car in the world.
