History and significance of Mi-4: The Mi-4, known in USAF/DoD reports as "Type 36" and in NATO code as "Hound," was designed in response to the American H-19 Chickasaw, which was widely used during the Korean War. Although the Mi-4 resembles the H-19 in overall layout, including the innovative placement of the engine in front of the cockpit, it is a larger helicopter capable of lifting heavier loads and produced in greater numbers. The first model entered service in 1953, and the world first saw it in 1952 during Aviation Day in Tushino.

The Mi-4 became the foundation of Soviet military aviation, being widely used in both the armed forces and the civilian aviation of the USSR. For several decades, it remained the main type of helicopter in the arsenal of Soviet armed forces and the civilian air fleet. Over time, it was replaced by more modern designs, such as the Mi-8, but its impact on the development of aviation was invaluable.

Operations and applications: The Mi-4 played a key role in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. It was the primary transport helicopter of the Indian Air Force, supporting medium-range operations. One of the most famous operations involving it was the Meghna Heli Bridge operation, which enabled the Indian army to cross the Meghna River. It was the first air assault operation of the Indian army using helicopters.

After being retired from military service, the Mi-4 found applications in many civilian roles, such as search and rescue, firefighting, polar expeditions, cargo transport at construction sites, and commercial flights. Although most of them have been retired from use, some examples were still in operation in North Korea.
