Original MiG-17 aircraft:

The MiG-17, also known by its NATO code "Fresco," is a Soviet subsonic fighter that entered production in 1952. It was an advanced development of the earlier MiG-15 model, which gained fame during the Korean War. Although the MiG-17 did not participate in that war, its first combat use occurred during the second Taiwan Strait crisis in 1958.

The MiG-17 was primarily designed to combat slower American bombers, but its true potential was revealed during the Vietnam War. Thanks to its agility and maneuverability, the MiG-17 proved effective in engagements with American fighters such as the F-4 Phantom and F-105 Thunderchief, which were focused on speed and long-range combat. The MiG-17 was armed with cannons, giving it an advantage over the early models of the F-4 Phantom, which lacked gun armament.

Operational history:

The MiG-17 was used by many air forces around the world, including China, which produced it under license as the Shenyang J-5, and Poland, where it was known as the PZL-Mielec Lim-6. This aircraft is still in use by the North Korean air force.

During the Vietnam War, the MiG-17 played a key role in the successes of the North Vietnamese air force. In 1965, when the Americans had numerical superiority, the MiG-17 was the main interceptor, responsible for the first aerial victories of North Vietnam. Some Vietnamese pilots preferred the MiG-17 over the MiG-21 due to its greater maneuverability, despite being slower. Three of the sixteen North Vietnamese ace pilots earned their titles flying the MiG-17.

The MiG-17 was also used in the role of a fighter-bomber, although it was not originally designed for that purpose. In 1972, modified MiG-17s conducted attacks on American warships, which was one of the few instances of this aircraft being used in an assault role.
