History and technical background:
The MiG-19, known by its NATO code as "Farmer," was the first Soviet production fighter capable of achieving supersonic speeds in level flight. Designed by the Mikoyan and Gurevich design bureau, this aircraft was a response to the Soviet Union's needs for modern fighters capable of engaging American machines from the "Century" series, such as the North American F-100 Super Sabre. However, the MiG-19 most often faced more modern opponents, such as the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II and the Republic F-105 Thunderchief, particularly during the Vietnam conflict.
Despite a relatively short career in the Soviet armed forces, the MiG-19 gained recognition in China, where it was produced under license as the Shenyang J-6. The Chinese version was valued for its agility, maneuverability, and powerful armament in the form of cannons. The production of the J-6 lasted from 1958 to 1981, and this aircraft was used by the People's Liberation Army Air Force and exported to many countries.
Interesting facts:
- The Shenyang J-6, although based on the MiG-19 design, was adapted to Chinese needs and produced in large quantities. Its design also served as the basis for the Chinese attack aircraft Q-5, which is still used by some countries.
- The J-6 was considered a "disposable" aircraft, intended for operation for about 100 flight hours before requiring a thorough inspection. However, with careful maintenance, the Pakistan Air Force managed to extend this time to 130 hours.
- In recent years, some J-6 aircraft have been converted into unmanned aerial vehicles.
