Historical background: "Miracle on the Marne"

The Battle of the Marne, known in France as the "miracle on the Marne," was a key engagement of World War I that took place from September 5 to 12, 1914. The Germans, executing the Schlieffen Plan, aimed for a quick victory over France through a rapid march through Belgium to Paris. Initial German successes in August, including victories in the battles of Mons and at the borders, allowed them to occupy a significant part of northern France and Belgium.

However, as German forces approached within 40 km of Paris, their offensive began to falter. Franco-British forces, under the command of Joseph Joffre and John French, managed to halt the German advance in the valley of the Marne River. Through an effective counterattack, the Germans were forced to retreat to the Aisne River line, ending their attempt for a swift defeat of France.

The Battle of the Marne was not only a strategic victory for the Allies but also a moment that initiated a prolonged stalemate of trench warfare on the Western Front. It is estimated that around 250,000 French, 12,733 British, and 298,000 Germans were killed or wounded as a result of this battle. Historians such as Holger Herwig consider the Battle of the Marne to be the most important land battle of the 20th century, while some, like John J. Tierney Jr., regard it as the most significant battle in history.
