History and technical background: The Mitsubishi F-2 is a multirole fighter developed based on the American F-16 Fighting Falcon. It is produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in collaboration with Lockheed Martin, with a production split of 60/40 between Japan and the United States. The F-2 project is based on the F-16C Block 40 model, and its production began in 1996. The first units entered service in 2000.
By 2008, 76 aircraft had entered service, and a total of 98 units were produced. The Mitsubishi F-2 was the first combat fighter equipped with an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, the J/APG-1, introduced in 1995. This aircraft earned the nickname "Viper Zero," which refers to the unofficial name of the F-16 "Viper" and the historical Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter.
