History of the Mitsubishi G4M: The Mitsubishi G4M, also known as "Betty," was a twin-engine medium-range bomber that played a key role in the Pacific War. Its design was the result of a pursuit of excellent flight performance and range, which unfortunately came at the cost of crew protection. The lack of armor and self-sealing fuel tanks made it susceptible to catching fire upon being hit, earning it the nickname "Flying Lighter."
The G4M was used in many key battles, including attacks on Allied ships, such as the sinking of the British battleships HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse. It was also involved in operations in the Philippines, China, and the campaign in Guadalcanal. Despite its flaws, the G4M was the most produced and well-known Japanese bomber during World War II.
