History of Mitsubishi MU-2: The Mitsubishi MU-2 is a Japanese twin-engine turboprop aircraft with a high wing and pressurized cabin, produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Its first flight took place in September 1963, and production continued until 1986. A total of 704 units of this model were produced, both in Japan and in San Angelo, Texas, USA.
Work on the MU-2 began in 1956, and the aircraft was designed as a light turboprop transport capable of fulfilling various civil and military roles. The first units were powered by Turbomeca Astazou engines, while later versions received Garrett TPE331 engines, which became the standard for all subsequent models.
The MU-2 is characterized by high cruising speed and low landing speed, achieved by using spoilers over the wings instead of conventional ailerons and full-span slotted flaps on the trailing edge of the wing. As a result, the wing loading of the MU-2 is comparable to that of the Beechcraft King Air in landing configuration, and in cruise flight to that of a light jet.
Military application: The Japan Self-Defense Forces were the only military users of the MU-2 in active service. These aircraft were used as liaison machines and for photographic reconnaissance. The search and rescue versions MU-2S were equipped with additional equipment, such as a radar in the nose, increased fuel capacity, bulged observation windows, and sliding doors for raft drops.
Model kit: The Mitsubishi MU-2A "Air Rescue Wing 50th Anniversary" model with tractor is an excellent opportunity to recreate one of the most recognizable rescue aircraft in Japan. The set offers detailed representation of the aircraft for the 50th anniversary of the rescue unit, making it a unique addition to any modeling collection. With the included decals, modelers can accurately replicate the historical markings of the aircraft, further emphasizing its authenticity and collectible value.
