Historical background: Bernard Law Montgomery began his military career during World War I, gradually rising through the ranks of the British Army. During World War II, he commanded the 3rd Division of the British Expeditionary Force in France. In the autumn of 1942, he took command of British forces in North Africa, where he achieved a decisive victory over German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, known as the "Desert Fox". By December 1943, Montgomery was in command of the 21st Army Group and became the commander of Allied ground forces in Europe.
