The Moskvitch-401-420 was a continuation of the Moskvitch-400 model, which in turn was a faithful copy of the German Opel Kadett K38.

History and background: The Moskvitch-401-420 is a passenger car produced by the Moscow Small Car Factory (MZMA) since 1954. It was an improved variant of the Moskvitch-400 model, which debuted in 1946 as the first car of the Moskvitch brand. The production of the Moskvitch-401-420 lasted until 1956, with a total of 216,006 units of this model produced.

This car was equipped with a low-valve M-401 engine with a displacement of 1074 cm3, generating 26 HP. Thanks to the increased compression ratio, this engine was more efficient than its predecessor. The Moskvitch-401-420 featured a self-supporting body and independent Dubonnet front suspension, providing better ride comfort.

The Moskvitch-401-420 was one of the first cars available for regular sale to the population of the USSR, making it relatively popular among citizens. This car was exported to many countries, including Finland, Poland, Albania, and China. A small number also reached the markets of Western Europe. The Moskvitch-401-420 was used not only by private users but also as an official car in various institutions, including the militia.
