History of the original:
The North American P-51 Mustang is considered one of the best fighters of World War II. The P-51D version, introduced into service in 1944, featured a bubble canopy providing excellent visibility and reinforced armament consisting of six 12.7 mm machine guns. Thanks to the Packard V-1650-7 engine (a licensed version of the Rolls-Royce Merlin), the aircraft achieved excellent performance at high altitudes, making it an ideal escort machine for strategic bombers operating over Europe.
