Aircraft History: The Nakajima B5N2, also known as "Kate" in Allied code, was a Japanese torpedo bomber that gained fame as one of the most effective torpedo bombers in the early Pacific War. Officially known as the Type 97-3 Carrier Attack Aircraft, the B5N2 was used by the Imperial Japanese Navy as the primary torpedo and bomb attack aircraft launched from aircraft carriers.
During the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the B5N2 played a crucial role in crippling the U.S. Pacific Fleet. In the first wave of the attack, 40 "Kate" aircraft launched torpedoes, sinking four battleships: USS California, USS Oklahoma, USS West Virginia, and USS Nevada. Another 49 B5N2 bombers conducted high-altitude attacks, critically damaging USS Arizona.

Design and Performance: The B5N2 was a single-engine, low-wing monoplane with an advanced aerodynamic design that minimized air resistance. The aircraft featured large wings, providing sufficient lift to carry a heavy combat load. The hydraulically folding wings made storage aboard aircraft carriers easier.
Role in the War: Following its success at Pearl Harbor, the B5N2 continued to prove its effectiveness in naval battles, helping to sink or damage three U.S. aircraft carriers: USS Lexington, USS Yorktown, and USS Hornet within the first year of the war. Despite its success, the B5N2 had defensive limitations, making it an easy target for enemy fighters without adequate fighter cover.
The Hasegawa Nakajima B5N2 (Type 97) model kit offers a great opportunity to recreate one of World War II’s most significant aircraft, which had a major impact on the Pacific War. With its precise detailing, this model is not only a challenge for modelers but also a valuable addition to any historical collection.
