History and technical background:

Neubaufahrzeug (NbFz) was a German heavy tank designed in 1933 on the orders of the Reichswehr. It was a three-turret vehicle, making it one of the more complicated projects of that time. By 1935, only five prototypes had been produced, which were mainly used for propaganda and training purposes.

The tank had a central turret, in which artillery armament was mounted. Two of the prototypes were equipped with turrets constructed by the Krupp concern, with 105 mm and 37 mm guns, while the other three had Rheinmetall-Borsig turrets with 75 mm and 37 mm guns. Additionally, the central turret housed a MG 13 machine gun. Besides the main turret, the tank had two smaller turrets with MG 13 machine guns, which were standard turrets used in the light tanks PzKpfw I.

Although the Neubaufahrzeug did not enter serial production, three of the prototypes were used during the invasion of Norway in 1940. These tanks were unloaded at the port of Oslo and participated in the fighting, but their combat effectiveness was limited due to mechanical problems and poor armor. One of the tanks was destroyed, and the other two were transported back to Germany, where trials continued with them.
