History and significance of the P-51D Mustang:

The North American P-51 Mustang is an American long-range fighter that gained fame during World War II and the Korean War. Designed in 1940 by a team led by James H. Kindelberger from North American Aviation, the Mustang was a response to the British purchasing commission's demand for a modern fighter. The first prototype, designated NA-73X, was completed in a record time of 102 days from the signing of the contract and made its maiden flight on October 26, 1940.

Initially, the Mustang was equipped with an Allison V-1710 engine, which limited its performance at high altitudes. A breakthrough occurred when, in 1942, it was fitted with a Rolls-Royce Merlin 65 engine, significantly improving its performance at altitudes above 15,000 feet (about 4,600 meters). The P-51D version, considered the most iconic, was powered by a Packard V-1650-7 engine, a licensed version of the Merlin 66, and armed with six .50 caliber (12.7 mm) Browning machine guns.

Mustangs played a crucial role in ensuring air superiority for the Allies in Europe. From late 1943, the P-51B and P-51C, and later the P-51D, were used by the 8th Air Force USAAF to escort bombers during raids on Germany. The RAF and the 9th Air Force USAAF also used them as fighter-bombers. During World War II, Mustang pilots reported the destruction of 4,950 enemy aircraft.

After the war, Mustangs continued to be used by many air forces around the world, and their popularity grew among civilian aviation enthusiasts and air race participants. During the Korean War, although replaced by jets, they still served as fighter-bombers.
