Historical background:

Operation Barbarossa, which began on June 22, 1941, was the largest and most costly military offensive in human history. It was the invasion of the Soviet Union by Nazi Germany and several of their European Axis allies. The aim of the operation was to capture territories up to the Arkhangelsk-Astrakhan line, which would allow for the repopulation of these areas by Germans according to the Generalplan Ost. This operation opened the Eastern Front, which became the largest and bloodiest theater of ground operations in history.

Despite initial successes, such as the capture of Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Rostov-on-Don, German forces encountered strong resistance from the Red Army. Winter conditions, logistical problems, and the determination of Soviet defenders led to the halt of the offensive near Moscow and the beginning of the Soviet counteroffensive. Operation Barbarossa ended in failure, which reversed the course of the war against Germany.
