Plastic model kit: Oseberg Drakkar 1:180 Smer 0904

The drakkar was the largest type of ship used by the Vikings, belonging to the so-called longship family. Units of this type represented the pinnacle of medieval Scandinavian shipbuilding. Drakkars were ocean-going vessels, allowing them to sail freely on the difficult waters of the North Sea or the Baltic Sea. At the same time, thanks to their very shallow draft, they were ideally suited for sailing on European rivers, which allowed the Vikings to carry out surprising inland raids.

A characteristic feature of drakkars was the clinker-built hull and slender hulls (the width-to-length ratio was often 7:1). This allowed for high speeds, estimated at even 13-15 knots. Both oars and a single square sail were used for propulsion. The name "drakkar" comes from the sculpture depicting a dragon's head placed on the stem, which was intended to scare away the opponent's guardian deities.

The Smer model depicts the famous Oseberg ship, the perfectly preserved original of which was found in a burial mound in Norway. This is a classic plastic kit for self-assembly and painting.
