Historical curiosities: The Bell P-39 Airacobra was one of the main American fighters at the time when the United States entered the war. This aircraft was used by the United States Army Air Forces, as well as by other armed forces, such as the Free French Air Forces, the Royal Air Force, and the Italian Co-belligerent Forces. The P-39 was distinguished by its unusual design layout, with the engine placed in the central part of the fuselage, behind the pilot, which drove a propeller located at the front via a long shaft. It was also the first fighter equipped with a tricycle landing gear.

Although the innovative placement of the engine was groundbreaking, the P-39 design was limited by the lack of an efficient turbocharger, which prevented it from operating effectively at high altitudes. For this reason, it was rejected by the RAF for use over Western Europe but was accepted by the USSR, where most air combat took place at medium and lower altitudes. In the hands of Soviet pilots, the P-39 achieved the highest number of kills attributed to any American fighter aircraft used by any air forces in any conflict.
