History and use of the P-39 Airacobra:

The Bell P-39 Airacobra was one of the main American fighters used by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. This aircraft was distinguished by its unusual design layout, with the engine located in the central part of the fuselage, behind the pilot, which drove a propeller located at the front via a long shaft. It was also the first fighter equipped with a tricycle landing gear.

Although the innovative engine layout was groundbreaking, the P-39's design suffered from a lack of an efficient turbocharger, which limited its capabilities at high altitudes. For this reason, it was rejected by the RAF for use over Western Europe, but was accepted by the USSR, where most air combat occurred at medium and lower altitudes.

The P-39 Airacobra was widely used by the Soviet Air Forces, which achieved the highest number of kills attributed to any American fighter aircraft used by any air forces in any conflict. Other major users of this type of aircraft included Free France, the Royal Air Force, and the Italian Co-Belligerent Forces.

Assembly and painting kit. Does not include paints or glue. Assembly requires separately sold modeling tools (including cutters, files, tweezers), paints, brushes, and plastic model glue (e.g., Tamiya Extra Thin Cement). The photo shows a professionally assembled and painted model.
