History of the P-39 Airacobra: The Bell P-39 Airacobra was a fighter aircraft produced by Bell Aircraft for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. It was one of the main American fighters at the time the United States entered the war. The P-39 was used by the Soviet Air Forces, which achieved the highest number of aerial victories attributed to any American fighter aircraft used by any air forces in any conflict. Other major users of this type included Free France, the Royal Air Force, and the Italian Co-Belligerent Forces.
The P-39 featured an unusual layout, with the engine located in the central part of the fuselage, behind the pilot, driving a pusher propeller in the nose via a long shaft. It was also the first fighter equipped with a tricycle landing gear. Although its mid-mounted engine was innovative, the P-39's design was limited by the lack of an efficient turbocharger, which prevented it from performing well at high altitudes. For this reason, it was rejected by the RAF for use over Western Europe but was accepted by the USSR, where most air combat occurred at medium and lower altitudes.
Operational history: The Airacobra participated in combat around the world, particularly in the Pacific, Mediterranean, and Eastern Front. Because its engine was equipped with only a single-speed supercharger, the P-39 struggled at altitudes above 5,200 meters. In Western Europe and the Pacific, the Airacobra was gradually relegated to other tasks, often used at lower altitudes for missions such as ground attack.
Use by the USSR: Almost half of all P-39s were sent to the Soviet Union: 4,719 units, which accounted for over one-third of all fighters delivered by the USA and Great Britain to the VVS. The tactical environment of the Eastern Front suited the P-39's strengths – robust construction, reliable radio equipment, and good firepower – and did not require high speed or performance at high altitudes, as in RAF and AAF operations.
Soviet pilots appreciated the M4 cannon with its powerful rounds and reliable performance, although they complained about its low rate of fire and insufficient ammunition capacity. P-39s were primarily used for air-to-air combat, and Soviet pilots developed effective tactics for group air combat, achieving a significant number of victories over various German aircraft.
