The P-47 Thunderbolt, also known as the "Jug," was one of the main fighters of the United States Army during World War II. Produced by Republic Aviation from 1941 to 1945, this aircraft achieved success both in Europe and the Pacific as an escort fighter, well-suited for air combat at high altitudes. It was also a leading American fighter-bomber in ground attack roles.
The P-47 was known for its firepower: its main armament consisted of eight .50 caliber machine guns, and it could also carry 5-inch rockets or a bomb load of 2,500 pounds (1,100 kg). At full load, the aircraft weighed up to 8 tons, making it one of the heaviest fighters of the war. It was also known for its ability to stay airborne despite combat damage.
The P-47 was powered by a powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine with 18 cylinders, which also powered the Grumman F6F Hellcat and Vought F4U Corsair fighters. An advanced turbocharger provided the aircraft with dominance at high altitudes, while also affecting its size and design. The armored cockpit was relatively spacious and comfortable, and the sliding canopy introduced in the D variant offered good visibility.
The P-47 also served in the air forces of France, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, as well as in the squadrons of Mexican and Brazilian allies. It is also the namesake of the later American attack aircraft, the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II.
