The German 3.7 cm PaK 36 (Panzerabwehrkanone 36) anti-tank gun is one of the most recognizable artillery designs from the early period of World War II. Developed in the 1920s by Rheinmetall, it entered service in 1928, becoming the basic anti-tank weapon of the Wehrmacht. In 1936, the weapon received the official designation Pak 35/36. Its variant, the 3.7 cm KwK 36 L45, was the main armament of early versions of the Pz.Kpfw III tanks (Ausf. A-G).

Although it was a modern design at the time of its introduction, the rapid development of Allied tank armor verified its effectiveness. Difficulties in penetrating thicker armor were already noted during the September Campaign in 1939, and the fighting in France in 1940 against tanks such as the Matilda II or Char B1 showed its complete uselessness. It was then that it gained the ironic nickname "Heeresanklopfgerät" (door knocker). Nevertheless, these guns took part in the initial phase of Operation Barbarossa in 1941, where they proved powerless against the Soviet T-34 and KV-1. From 1941, they were successively replaced by the more powerful PaK 38 guns.
