  • Scale: 1:35
  • Manufacturer: Amusing Hobby
  • Catalog number: 35A059

History and technical background:

VK 45.01 (P), also known as Tiger (P) or Porsche Tiger, was a prototype heavy tank designed by Ferdinand Porsche in Germany. This project was created in response to the demand for a 45-ton tank capable of mounting the 8.8 cm Kwk 36 L/56 gun, which was derived from the German 88 mm Flak 37 anti-aircraft gun. Despite its innovative approach to propulsion, which utilized gasoline-electric engines, Porsche's design lost out to the competing Henschel model, which became known as the Tiger I.

The tank was powered by two air-cooled Porsche Type 101 V-10 engines that powered electric generators, driving electric motors responsible for the movement of the tracks. This innovative drive system was, however, complicated and required large amounts of copper, which was difficult to achieve under wartime conditions. VK 45.01 (P) featured a unique suspension with six pairs of road wheels on each side, divided into three double-wheeled bogies. This design differed from the more well-known interleaved wheel arrangement used in the Tiger I. The turret, designed by Krupp, was mounted at the front of the hull and equipped with an 8.8 cm KwK 36 gun and a co-axial MG 34 machine gun.

Of the 90 Tiger (P) chassis produced, most were converted into tank destroyers known as Elefant. Only one Tiger (P) was used in combat as a command tank in the Panzerjäger Abteilung 653 unit. It was put into service in April 1944 but was lost by July of the same year.
