History and background:
The "Donnerbuchse," which translates to "thunder box," got its name due to the characteristic noise it made while in motion. These were four-wheeled passenger cars that began to be built from 1921. Unlike their predecessors, these cars were made entirely of iron or steel, which was a novelty at the time. The name "Donnerbuchse" referred to the loud rumbling that resulted from the lack of proper damping.
Between 1921 and 1923, in response to the shortage of cars after World War I, Deutsche Reichsbahn ordered new passenger cars based on standard designs known as Einheitsbauart. Although the initial plan was to produce steel cars, many factories could not immediately switch their production lines, resulting in most of the first batches of cars still having wooden bodies.
