History and significance of the Polikarpov Po-2:
The Polikarpov Po-2, known by its NATO codename "Mule," was one of the longest-produced aircraft in the Soviet Union, with production lasting from 1929 until 1959, including licensed production in Poland. This aircraft was extremely versatile, serving as a training, reconnaissance, liaison aircraft, as well as a light night bomber.
Design and development:
The aircraft was designed by Nikolai Polikarpov as a successor to the U-1, which was a copy of the British Avro 504. The U-2 prototype, powered by the Shvetsov M-11 engine, made its first flight on January 7, 1928. Serial production began in 1929 in Leningrad. After Polikarpov's death in 1944, the aircraft was renamed Po-2.
Use during World War II:
During World War II, the Po-2 was widely used on the Eastern Front, mainly as a liaison, medical, and supply aircraft. Its STOL (short takeoff and landing) capabilities made it ideal for operations behind enemy lines, including supplying partisans. In 1941, trials began to arm the Po-2 with bombs, leading to its adaptation as a light night bomber.
One of the most famous episodes involving the Po-2 was the activity of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, consisting of female pilots known as the "Night Witches." Their night raids on German positions were not only effective but also had a significant psychological impact on German troops.
Korean War:
During the Korean War, the Po-2 was used by North Korean forces for night raids on UN bases. Its wooden construction and small radar cross-section made it difficult to detect and shoot down by radar-equipped fighters.
Interesting facts:
- The Po-2 is the only biplane that has shot down a jet aircraft.
- This aircraft was known for its distinctive engine sound, earning it many nicknames such as "Sewing Machine" or "Coffee Grinder."
- Its wooden and fabric construction made it susceptible to catching fire from tracer rounds, earning it the nickname "Kerosinka" (kerosene lamp).
