History and usage:
The 75mm wz. 1897 gun, also known as Canon de 75 mle 1897, was one of the most important light artillery pieces in the arsenal of the Polish Army. It arrived in Poland in 1918 with General Haller's army and quickly became the standard equipment of light artillery. In the 1920s, Poland received additional specimens from France and also purchased another 300 pieces in 1924. Additionally, 108 guns were obtained from Romania in exchange for other armaments.
The gun was valued for its versatility and effectiveness in maneuver warfare. Its range was up to 11,200 meters, and its rate of fire reached 12 rounds per minute. It was equipped with a protective shield 8 mm thick and could be used with various types of ammunition, including shrapnel, grenades, anti-tank, smoke, and signaling shells. The crew of the gun consisted of 6 people.
In 1937, some guns were adapted for motor traction by replacing wooden wheels with metal ones fitted with tires. They were towed by C7P artillery tractors or PZlnż. wz. 34 half-track vehicles, which increased their mobility and application as anti-tank weapons.
During the September campaign in 1939, the Polish Army had 1,374 guns of this type. They were used in 39 light artillery regiments, 14 light artillery squadrons, and other units. Although the gun was excellent in maneuver warfare, its use in the positional battles of World War I was limited due to insufficient range and destructive power.
