History and use of the Bofors 40 mm wz. 36 gun:
The Bofors 40 mm wz. 36 anti-aircraft gun was the Polish variant of the Swedish Bofors gun, which was developed in 1933 by the Bofors company. Poland, as one of the first countries, purchased these guns and then began their production under license. This gun was known for its excellent ballistic properties and effectiveness in combat against aerial targets at altitudes of up to 3000 meters.
Before the outbreak of World War II, Poland planned to achieve a stock of 638 guns of this type, but due to exports to other countries such as Great Britain, Romania, and the Netherlands, this number was not reached. At the outbreak of the war, the Polish Army had 144 Bofors 40 mm anti-aircraft guns.
The gun was mounted on various platforms, including land, naval, and vehicles. It was produced in single, double, and quadruple versions. In the Polish armed forces, these guns were towed by C2P artillery tractors, which also served to transport ammunition and equipment.
The Bofors 40 mm wz. 36 played a key role in Poland's air defense during the September campaign in 1939. It was used by both ground forces and the navy. In the navy, twin sets were mounted on surface ships such as OORP “Grom”, “Błyskawica”, and “Gryf”, as well as on submarines OORP “Orzeł” and “Sęp”.
Despite the difficult wartime conditions, Polish Bofors guns were valued for their reliability and effectiveness. Their production and export before the war testified to the high quality of the Polish arms industry.
