Historical background: The Polish cavalry in 1939 numbered around 70,000 soldiers, which constituted 10% of the country's armed forces. It was made up of 40 regiments, which were organized into brigades. Each brigade consisted of 3-4 regiments, and each regiment had 4 line squadrons, a heavy machine gun squadron, an anti-tank platoon, and auxiliary units. Among the regiments, there were distinguished regiments of lancers, uhlans, and mounted riflemen.

The Polish cavalry was tasked with conducting reconnaissance, covering, and delaying actions. Although it was considered the elite of the Polish army, its role in modern warfare, dominated by aviation and tanks, was limited. Cavalry brigades were used for delaying actions on secondary fronts, as well as for covering mobilization and troop deployment.

Problems and limitations: The cavalry was armed with firearms, sabers, and anti-tank rifles, but it was inferior to the German armored forces and aviation. There was a lack of adequate anti-tank weaponry, and armored cars were outdated. Additionally, the lack of sufficient transport means and fuel for motorized brigades posed an additional challenge.

Significance in the September campaign: Despite the limitations, the Polish cavalry demonstrated courage and determination, engaging in battles on many fronts. Cavalry charges against tanks were a marginal phenomenon and did not affect the outcome of the campaign, but they became a symbol of the heroism and sacrifice of Polish soldiers. Ultimately, the defeat of the cavalry was the result of the enemy's technological and numerical superiority and the lack of support from allies.
