History and construction of the original: The Panzerkampfwagen II Ausf. L "Luchs" was developed by Daimler-Benz and MAN between 1940 and 1942. It was the only Panzer II project with the Schachtellaufwerk wheel arrangement and "slack track" configuration that went into serial production. A total of 100 units were produced from September 1943 to January 1944. This tank was larger than its predecessor, the Panzer II Ausf. G, and could reach speeds of up to 60 km/h thanks to its six-speed transmission.

Luchs tanks were primarily used in reconnaissance units of the Wehrmacht. The first units were assigned to the 2nd Company of the 4th Reconnaissance Battalion of the 4th Armored Division. Later, after reorganization, these tanks were incorporated into the 1st Company of the 9th Reconnaissance Battalion of the 9th Armored Division. The Luchs participated in operations on the Western Front, including the Battle of France in June 1944. Despite limited production, these tanks were used until the end of the war.
