History and use of PzKpfw III:

Panzerkampfwagen III, known as PzKpfw III, was one of the main tanks used by Germany during World War II. Designed in the 1930s, it was intended to serve as a medium tank capable of fighting other armored vehicles. Initially armed with a 3.7 cm caliber gun, later versions were equipped with a 5 cm KwK 38 gun, which proved insufficient in encounters with Soviet T-34 and KV-1 tanks.

During the September campaign in Poland, the PzKpfw III Ausf. D was used in limited numbers. Its armor, ranging from 15 to 30 mm thick, was vulnerable to attacks from Polish anti-tank weapons, including Bofors guns and anti-tank rifles "UR". Nevertheless, these tanks played a significant role in the early stages of the war, and the experiences gained from their use influenced the decision to increase armor thickness in later models.

As the war progressed, the PzKpfw III was gradually replaced by more advanced models, such as the PzKpfw IV and PzKpfw V Panther. However, its chassis was used in the production of assault guns StuG III, which were produced until the end of the war. In total, approximately 18,000 vehicles were produced based on the PzKpfw III chassis, making it one of the most frequently produced German armored vehicles.
