History and significance of the Tiger I tank: The Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. E, known as Tiger I, is a German heavy tank from World War II that entered service in 1942. It was the first German armored vehicle equipped with the powerful 8.8 cm KwK 36 gun, which was an adaptation of the famous 8.8 cm Flak 36 anti-aircraft gun. This tank was produced from August 1942 to August 1944, with a total of 1347 units built.
The Tiger I was known for its powerful armament and thick armor, making it a formidable opponent on the battlefield. It was used on all major fronts, including North Africa and the Eastern Front. Despite its combat effectiveness, this tank was criticized for its complicated design, high production costs, and reliability issues, especially in difficult terrain conditions.
Today, only nine examples of the Tiger I tank survive worldwide, of which only one, Tiger 131, located in the Tank Museum in the UK, has been restored to running condition.
