Description
Plastic model kit: Q-2A (KDA-1) Firebee US Drone 1:48 ICM 48402
A plastic model kit depicting the American Q-2A (KDA-1) Firebee unmanned target drone. These drones were developed in the United States by the Ryan company for the US Air Force (USAF). The prototype's first flight took place in early 1951. The design featured swept wings and tail surfaces, as well as a characteristic air intake in the nose section.
The Firebee could be air-launched by a mother aircraft (the first of which was the Douglas A-26 Invader) or launched from a ground catapult using JATO rocket boosters. Following successful tests, the drone entered serial production and was adopted by the Air Force, Navy, and US Army. These units, simulating aerial targets, were used to train fighter pilots and anti-aircraft defense crews.
