Original aircraft: North American B-25 Mitchell
The North American B-25 Mitchell is an American medium bomber that entered service in 1941. Named after Brigadier General William "Billy" Mitchell, a pioneer of American military aviation, the B-25 became one of the most important bombers used by Allied forces during World War II. A total of nearly 10,000 units of this aircraft were produced, making it the most frequently produced American medium bomber and the third most produced American bomber overall.
History and development:
The B-25 Mitchell was used in every theater of war during World War II, and after its conclusion, many remained in service for decades. This aircraft was produced in many variants, including as the reconnaissance aircraft F-10, training aircraft AT-24, and patrol aircraft PBJ-1 for the United States Marine Corps.
The first B-25 models had stability issues, which were resolved by changing the wing angle, giving the aircraft its characteristic gull wing shape. The B-25C and B-25D versions were produced in various factories and introduced further improvements, such as better armament and de-icing equipment.
Service in the RAF:
The Royal Air Force (RAF) was one of the first users of the B-25 thanks to the Lend-Lease program. The first Mitchells, known as Mitchell I, were delivered in August 1941 and were primarily used for training. The B-25C and B-25D versions, known as Mitchell II, were used operationally by the RAF, including during attacks on oil installations in Ghent in January 1943. After the invasion of Europe, RAF Mitchell squadrons supported Allied forces from bases in France and Belgium.
Flight characteristics and durability:
The B-25 was known for its durability and ability to survive significant combat damage. An example is the aircraft "Patches" from the 321st Bomb Group, which completed over 300 missions and had over 400 patched holes from shrapnel. This aircraft was also easy to fly, although its engines were very loud, leading to hearing problems for many pilots.
Assembly and painting kit. Does not include paints or glue. Assembly requires separately sold modeling tools (including cutters, files, tweezers), paints, brushes, and plastic model glue (e.g., Tamiya Extra Thin Cement). The photo shows a professionally assembled and painted model.
