The Renault FT-17 is one of the most revolutionary and influential tank designs in history. This French light tank, often referred to in post-war literature as the FT-17, FT17, or similarly, was the first mass-produced tank to feature armament mounted in a fully rotating turret. The configuration of the Renault FT, with the crew compartment at the front, the engine compartment at the rear, and the main armament in a rotating turret, became the standard tank layout that persists to this day. For this reason, some military historians refer to the Renault FT as the first modern tank in the world.

History and significance of the Renault FT-17: The Renault FT-17 was produced in over 3000 units by France, most of which were made in 1918. After the end of World War I, FT tanks were exported in large quantities. Copies and derivative designs were produced in the United States (light tank M1917), Italy (Fiat 3000), and the Soviet Union (tank T-18). The Renault FT participated in interwar conflicts around the world, but by the beginning of World War II, it was already considered outdated.
