Michael Wittmann was born on April 22, 1914, and gained fame as a tank commander during World War II. His most famous feat was the ambush of elements of the British 7th Armoured Division during the Battle of Villers-Bocage on June 13, 1944. Commanding a Tiger I tank, Wittmann destroyed up to 14 tanks, 15 armored personnel carriers, and two anti-tank guns in just 15 minutes before his own tank was immobilized.
After the war, Wittmann became a cult figure, often portrayed as a "tank ace" in popular culture. His achievements have been widely commented on and analyzed by historians, who have mixed opinions about his tactical skills. While some praised his actions at Villers-Bocage, others believed that his abilities were overrated and that the number of tanks he destroyed was inflated.
Despite the controversies surrounding him, Wittmann is regarded as one of the most effective tank commanders in history, with attributed destruction ranging from 135 to 138 enemy tanks. It is worth noting that German successes in destroying tanks were recorded as unit achievements, which may affect the accuracy of these figures. On February 2, 1944, when Adolf Hitler awarded him the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross, his official tally was 117 destroyed tanks.
